A fraction of the feed escapes to the classification to go directly to the underflow

This reality can be seen on the particle recovery curves here above.

This is explained by the fact that the fine particles contained in the fraction sedimented near the wall are subjected to any radial flow.

 

Proposed solution

We proposed to create a centrifuged flow of washing water starting from the surface of sedimentation.

The sedimented slurry has to jump over the water layer that move the fine particules to the overflow.

Turbulences generated by the tangential injection

The tangential injection causes lateral stresses, including axial one. Downstream, the injected flow disperses axially causing inter laminar shear.

In another direction, the lateral stresses are responsible for the observed radial flow along the upper wall creating a short circuit.

 

This crushing of flow is well observed by this CFD study.
It is all the more important as speeds of injection are high. Thus, it is not recommended to exceed 3m/sec
